The Beginning of a New Era..

I know I haven't posted in some time guys, but midterms have been killing me.

Anyway, back to what is important: Track B-W Track

Today's topic? Throwing... Far

I remember one of the first times I spoke with Kevin Phipps. It was at an indoor meet during last season and I was starting to become acquainted with everyone. The throwers were getting ready for the weight throw and I caught Phipps in between throws to ask him a question.

Me: "What are you gonna throw today, Phipps?"
Kevin: "Far."

This was all he said. Since this former All-American has taken over as the Throws Coach at Baldwin-Wallace, this is what he is getting our throwers to do.

B-W throwers: Dominated the OAC by Scoring a Total of 72 Points at the Conference Meet

But wait, there's more! There are a few events that we will be picking up outdoor come spring and our Throwers are especially looking forward to continuing their dominance of the OAC.

Leslie Purnell
Are you a Supan Fan?
The throwers look to pick up even more points in the Discus, the Hammer and the Javelin. Junior Mitch Supan broke, now coach, Kevin Phipps's record last year in the Disc and is looking to qualify for Nationals yet again. His partner in crime Zac Marinucci is looking to put the rest of the OAC on the pavement in the Shot along with Senior Miles Moore. Junior Jake Buckey is looking forward to dropping Jav bombs across the Conference. The list goes on and on including athletes Tina Perrine, Leslie Purnell and newcomer Danielle Torrence. Need I say more?

This B-W Track team, under the ingenious recruiting of Assistant Coach Eric Schmuhl, has assembled a perennial powerhouse of throwers that can compete with the best of the best. Good luck to all those throwers looking to qualify for Nationals this Saturday at Mount Union.

Trying to figure out how to make the links "clickable" and so that the videos will actually show up in the blog post.

This will make it easier to interact with the blog.

The First of Many for One..

Hello All!

It's been quite a few days since my last post, but today marks a special day in the 2012 B-W Track & Field season.

Senior, Mike Smith, took his first full jump in the Triple Jump today. He jumped a distance of 12.70 meters which is the equivalent of almost 42 feet. Mike has been practicing for, uhh... One Day! This jump, had it been in competition, would put him at 5th in the OAC Conference. There is a lot of room for improvement for this guy, but the clock is ticking. Let's do work, Mike!

It may help if you jump more like Jonathan Edwards, though.

Welcome Back Jeremy Harris

Jeremy Harris (J-Hawk)
Not really in the mood for writing very much today, but we have 2 big meets coming up this weekend. Tonight we have our mid-February meet in which 11 teams will be in attendance and tomorrow, the All-Ohio Meet will take place.

I'd like to share something else with everyone. While watching Sportscenter this morning, I learned the story of a boy by the name of Evan Sullivano. He was nicknamed "The Brick" in Junior High because of his toughness on the football field. Click the link to watch the full story.

What is the Measure of a Man?

Brandon Eddy (Beddy)
This is Beddy.

After the team found out about my blog, this guy pulled me aside today and told me he wanted to be the first one I write a post about. Here it is bud.

This is nothing new for Beddy. Aside from the occasional fishing trip to Coe Lake or a pinch of Red Man to clear his mind, this kid is all about the Decathlon and loves being in the spotlight. I was talking to him today about his trip to Iowa in March for the Indoor National Meet, which I plan to attend to cheer him on to that number 1 spot, and he was asking me what we should do after he wins.

A line of ridiculous questions ensued... (Anyone that has talked to Beddy knows that he won't stop once he gets going)

Coach Schmuhl (left) and Beddy (right) discussing possible
emotions that could influence Beddy's performance during the
National meet

I entered a conversation that Beddy was having with Coach Schmuhl today. Coach told Beddy, "You have no idea the things that you will be feeling and it is nothing that you can prepare for; that is where you will truly find out what you are made of". Beddy's reply, of course, consisted of things like, "But I live for this, Coach" and "I don't have to think about my competition because they are gonna be thinking about me" and so on.

Beddy may come off as an arrogant and overconfident jackass sometimes, but this kid's mind and heart are in the right place. His focus is on getting better every day and doing whatever he can to make sure that his team succeeds.

Just watch the kid vault and you will know he's not just the Indoor Record holder at B-W for nothing.

Check out the article for yourself, this kid does work..

Introduction

What's up Track fans?
My name is Benny and I am a Triple Jumper and a Javelin Thrower at Baldwin-Wallace College.

This blog is going to be about my experiences with my teammates, our triumphs and failures together, working hard, but most importantly, it will be about having fun and building relationships.

I will introduce members of the team as well as our coaches and I will be documenting our road to (hopefully) another OAC Title as well as some athletes that are looking to pave their roads to the National Championship on the Jacket Track Steamroller.

After all, if you are not on the Steamroller... you are the pavement.
